Our U19s took the bragging rights for the second time this season in the battle of the 'Towns' as a 93rd minute free kick from substitute Cian Fay won today's Midlands El Clasico at City Calling Stadium.

Longford had the bulk of the games chances but where guilty of missing some great opportunities throughout. In the first half the excellent Karl Chambers hit the bar with a header from 6 yards with the keeper beaten all ends up after some brilliant build up play down the left. On the stroke of half time the Athlone net minder produced one of the finest saves you'll see pushing Daryl Carrigy's wonderful volleyed effort round the post. Athlone played on the counter attack but had chances of their own. Dylan McGoey made a great one on one save midway through the first half.

The second period saw our lads dominate but found it difficult to find a break through against a resilient Athlone. Chambers saw his left foot effort drift past the post after beaten the keeper. Moments later he hit the target but found the Athlone keeper in fine form. Our lads probed and probed. Carrigy blazed high and wide after getting in behind then skipper Keith Beirnes header just clipped the bar. Mc Goey was forced into a save down to his left after an error from Ciaran McGuinness allowed the Athlone striker race through. Late on, Cian Fay cross come shot came back off the bar as it looked like it would be one of those days. But in the 3rd minute of injury time the youngest player in the squad came up with a moment of magic bending his 25 yard free kick over the ball and past the keeper to give the home side all 3 points.

Thoughts of goal-scorer Cian Fay

I thought we were in control of the game from the start,we created the majority of the opportunities throughout the game but just couldn't manage to get that goal. I felt we dominated the game and they had there backs to the walls late on. For the goal to come in the last minute of the game the way it did mean a lot especially in a huge game like this but the most important thing was it helped the team get the three points.
