Ahead of Saturday's top of the table clash at City Calling Stadium, Kieran Burke (@burko77_) previews the action as Mervue United visit the City Calling Stadium in series 5 of the Airtricity League First Division.

Longford Town will be looking to make it three straight home wins in all competitions on Saturday night as Mervue United come to City Calling Stadium for a first versus second clash in the Airtricity League First Division.

Longford followed up their stunning 3-4 away win in Cobh on Saturday last with another come from behind win, this time in the Leinster Senior Cup against St.Kevin’s Boys with Tony Cousins side running out 2-1 winners. Longford’s last home game saw them also come from behind to defeat Waterford United 2-1, a habit the Longford Town manager is eager to erase as a team cannot be expected to come from behind time after time.

The visitors come into this game as one of the three undefeated sides in the First Division, having won two and drawn two of their opening four league games. Anyone who believed Mervue United are not the real deal this season were thoroughly corrected in the past two weeks with the Galwaymen picking up a smashing 4-0 victory at the RSC in Waterford while they also gave one of the title favourites, Finn Harps, a real scare last weekend when the men in Maroon lead 2-0 before having to settle for a 2-2 home draw to remain top at the time.

The main threat to Longford will come from two former Town players in the shape of Garry Curran and Tom King who are bossing the United midfield this season while, sixteen-year-old wonder striker, Ryan Manning is being hailed by some as the new Seani Maguire having gone on an impressive goal scoring streak alongside King in Mervue’s strong opening to the season.

With tough away trips to Wexford and Waterford next up on Longford’s fixture list three points are vital to Tony Cousin’s side if they want to maintain a gap at the top going into those two upcoming encounters.

Kick-off at City Calling Stadium is 7.30pm and with both these sides among the top scorers in the league it is sure to be an enthralling encounter.
