LTFC.ie reporter Kieran Burke (@burko77_) previews Saturday night’s massive encounter at the City Calling Stadium as Waterford United Longford Town in an early season promotion battle.
Waterford United are the first league visitors to the newly named City Calling Stadium as the bookies promotion favourites look to knock Longford out of their stride following a 5-0 away win for the Midlanders on opening weekend. That victory on the road was followed up on Monday night with another away win as ‘De Town’ knocked local rivals Athlone out of the EA Sports Cup.
These two great rivals met each other an astonishing six times in 2012 with Waterford holding the slight advantage in the head to head stakes with a 3-2 wins record while the second leg of the First Division play-off ended in a 1-1 draw.
Of course since Waterford’s demise in the the play-off final against Dundalk the ‘Blues’ have lost star man Seani Maguire to Premier League side West Ham United with the Irish underage international ripping Longford apart with a crucial hat-trick in the 4-2 game at the RS last season, a game that swung the promotion race on it’s head. Despite the loss of star man Maguire, United manager Paul O’Brien looks to have picked up a proven finisher in the form of ‘’Cogs’’ Quilty from the junior leagues in Waterford.
However, Quilty isn’t the only non-league player to make a mark early on in the LOI with Longford Town’s David O’Sullivan scoring a sensational hat-trick on his debut meaning we should see plenty of quality in both forwards line come Saturday night.
Last season’s runner up have a clean slate coming into this game while Paul O’Brien should have a full squad to select from with no significant injuries to report.
With 20 goals in the six games last season we should be in for another cracking encounter on Saturday night and with kick-off 7.30pm on St.Patrick’s night what better way to celebrate than by getting down to your local stadium and supporting ‘De Town’ as Tony Cousins side push for promotion to the Premier Division.
