Interview by Kevin Carberry
Longford Town FC are pleased to announce the signing of Athy native Mark Hughes, who joins the club from Drogheda United. Mark (22) is a midfielder, and made 25 appearances for Drogheda last year.
Longford Town Supporters Club spoke with Mark this week, and he is delighted to have signed for the club.
"I'm delighted to have signed for Longford and I'm really looking forward to the new season. Hopefully the team can push on and improve again from last season."
Mark began his career locally in Athy, before stints at St Kevin's Boys, Belvedere and Bray Wanderers u19s resulted in a move across the water, joining Scunthorpe United.
"I went over when I was 19 and didn't really know what to expect over there, but it was a really good experience and matured me a lot. It was a shame the way it ended but that's football and you just need to carry on with it."
Like fellow new signing Kealan Dillon, Mark joined our near neighbours Athlone upon his return to Ireland, winning the first division title in 2013.
"Yeah I really enjoyed my time at Athlone. I remember the derbys being very intense and good games. There was always a big following from Longford and Section O and I'm looking forward to playing in front of them!"
Having spoken to our manager Tony Cousins, Mark is looking forward to the season ahead.
"I met with Tony and was really impressed with his enthusiasm and professionalism about the coming year. The club is definitely going in the right direction and I'm very excited to be apart of it and can't wait for the season to come around.
We thank Mark for taking the time out to talk to us, and all at Longford Town Supporters Club wish Mark all the best in his time with the club.
