JOYLESS
There was no joy for De Town in Friday night's game against Galway Utd. A well taken headed goal by Jakes Keegan gave the visitors all three points. The hosts had chances but once again, we failed to make hay on this summer's evening. Gary Shaw and Stephen Rice both had to leave the pitch carrying injuries and add to that a ref who did us no favours at all and the small local crowd went home disappointed. At least we maintain our mid table position but with both Galway and Drogheda snapping at our heels and some tough assignments awaiting us after the break, it's going to be tough.
MID TERM
So here we are with our summer soccer break and plenty to ponder. If we were offered mid table at the kick off, I think most would have taken it. The young lads, Ayman Ben Mohamed and Kaleem Simon are probably getting more match time than they expected but both are doing very well. All the new lads are doing their bit but we miss the threat of Don Cowan and all supporters hope to see him back and perfectly fit after the break. Paul Skinner has done very well too. We could do with some punch up front and it'll be interesting to see if Tony Cousins can strengthen the squad.
Many left the City Calling Stadium disappointed when we surely deserved at least a share of the points but overall, we have to be quietly pleased with our league position. Put it this way, if we were to finish in the same spot, who'd complain.
One thing that's baffling all who who travel out the Strokestown Road...where are all the supporters gone. We're in the top flight, we're doing OK but we definitely could do with many, many more supporting Longford Town in Longford town.
PLAYER OF THE MONTH / MAY
Cathal McGuinness presented Stephen Rice with his player of the month award for May before the game against Galway on Friday night last. It was certainly a topsy turvy day for the hard working, skilful player. Earlier his team were beaten in the Kennedy Cup final in Limerick and later in the game had to be substituted. So hopefully, the well merited award will offer some form of silver lining.
