Longford Town U19 0-0 Mervue Utd U19

Thu Sep 26th 2013
A highly contested affair which offered loads of commitment and effort but few clear chances deservedly ended in Stalemate at the City Calling Stadium. Town had striker Ryan Carberry sent off and had to play the last quarter with ten men in a decision that baffled everyone in attendance.

The first half saw both sides have good spells of possession without creating many chances. The visitors threatened from set pieces while Longford had many good moves built up but could never quite find that final ball. The Town should have took the lead as early as the fifth minute but Adrian Bajgora somehow managed to shoot wide from 4 yards having met Dylan Mc Keever's great cross when it seemed easier to score. Mid way through the half saw United striker Mikey James get in behind following a mis judged clearance from Sean Durate but having bet David Mc Namara he saw his effort come back off the post.

The second period saw the games intensity lift with both sides trying to push forward to open the scoring. Mc Namara made a decent save at his near post to deny Mervue whilst Mc Keever, having latched onto a wonderful Lee Higgins pass lifted the ball over the on rushing keeper but couldn't get it down in time as the cross bar came to the visitors rescue. With both sides pushing for a winner Town where dealt a blow as Carberry was dismissed for what the official claimed was excessive force. With 15 minutes to go you would excuse the Longford lads for trying to hold onto there point but they kept pushing and nearly nicked it in the dying moments when first a combination of goalkeeper and cross bar kept out Higgin's free kick whilst both Ciaran Grogan and Mc Keever saw there follow ups blocked in a goal mouth scramble.

After the game Town manager Mark Connors was happy with his sides display "I think a draw was a fair result in the end. Both sides only created a handful of chances and could both have nicked it so I think a point each is fair. Defensively I thought we where Excellant. We denied them space and controlled any overloads and rotations they had very well. We felt we played out well into midfield and just lacked some imagination in the final third. We still have some work to do but where improving every week and that's all we can ask from the boys"
