WONDERFUL WIN IN WATERFORD

About 700 turned up at the RSC to see the League leaders take on the local heroes. Hopes were high locally of reversing the earlier meeting between the sides when the manager said they deserved more. So this was to be a major test on a sunny and mild May evening. Only a handful was able to travel south, but it was certainly worth every cent of what is now very expensive petrol to witness a wonderful win.

HARD WON WIN

As predicted beforehand, this game against Wexford Youths turned out to be a very difficult three points. With a televised Cup Final in Wembley, the attendance seemed to take a hit which didn’t help the atmosphere either. Normally we start brightly but on Saturday night last we seemed to be struggling for long periods to take control of what was a real tough encounter.

SAME AGAIN

Every game is different of course, but we beat Athlone by the same score as last time and the we had the same scorers, Colm James and Noel Haverty as in that magnificent win against Limerick.

BOUNCEBACKABILITY

The above is the term given to Saturday night’s game by one clever six year old, the Town had the ability to bounce back, or simply Bouncebackability. It was truly a night of some early drama, with teapots missing, MUtv photographers and cameramen milling around and a Euro song to be played at half time.

HARPS BREAK HEARTS

All good things come to an end sometime, and for the Town supporters, last Saturday night was that time. Finn Harps failed to beat us all last season so, was it any wonder both their team and supporters were in flying form after their 1-3 win at Flancare. The only consolation is that we’re still top of the league, even if by the more slender of margins.

GREAT GOOD FRIDAY

Good Friday was transformed into a great Friday following our wonderful 1-2 win against Limerick. It was a game the locals were looking forward to with relish and over 1,200 fans turned up to watch the two top teams do battle. Following the meagre attendance in Galway the previous week, it was a pleasant change to be part of a long line of expectant fans queuing up to enter the quaint Jackman Park, in the heart of Limerick city.

STILL TOPS

Despite our disappointing draw in Galway on Friday night last, we remain top of the first division. But we’re just about hanging on to that top spot by a single point over Limerick. A good crowd headed west and expectations were high as we entered Terryland Park. However as soon as we saw the state of the pitch, there were deep breaths and shaking of knowledgeable heads. There was more sand spread on the playing pitch than there was on Salthill beach and as many humps and hollows as a golf course.

PULSATING WIN

Following a balmy spring day, De Town produced a stunning spring show to light up the evening sky. Waterford Utd were our latest opposition and by all accounts, our toughest yet. However Tony Cousins’ men made no secret of their intent and from the kick off tore into the Blues with a dazzling display of attacking football. Their upbeat tempo was rewarded straight away when, after just two minutes Colm James found the back of the net from the edge of the box.

MORE VALUABLE POINTS

Make no mistake about it, the win down in Wexford was only after an other tough enough battle. We had enough chances to be out of sight by half time but between their keeper Doyle, being in great form and the width of the crossbar we had to settle for a one all half time frustration. Still though, it came good by the final whistle which made the long trip home feel a few miles shorter.

HARD WON VICTORY

Longford Town sit on top of the First Division following this hard won victory against near neighbours Athlone Town on Saturday night last.Of course there’s a long hard road road ahead, but “ a good start is half the battle”we’re told and even if it’s only after two games, we’ll take any good news to banish some of the bad news.
