With the Longford Town first team squad returning to training this weekend, manager Tony Cousins has released news on how the development of the 2013 panel is progressing to date. As well as some new additions, details of squad members retained have also been confirmed.
Remaining on from the squad that brought the club their most successful season in recent years are Noel Haverty, Willo McDonagh, Chris Deans, Des Hope, Keith Gillespie, Mark Salmon, Collie James, Gary Shaw, Michael Lee, Daniel Purdy and Paul Hunt.
“We’re happy that we’ve been able to hold on to the majority of last years squad and there had been interest from Premier Division clubs as well as clubs from Northern Ireland in a number of the lads, but they have shown their ambition in throwing their lot in with us for the coming season” said Cousins.
Joining them for the start of pre-season training are new additions Chris Bennion from Shelbourne, Corie Treacy from Limerick and former Wayside trio Willie Tyrrell, David O’Neill and current amateur international David O’Sullivan.
“The lads that we’ve brought in have the attitude we’re looking for and they should definitely be a great addition to the club. For the lads making the switch from the Leinster Senior League they’ve shown an eagerness to prove themselves at League level and I’m confident that they can make the step up”.
We’ve another couple of irons in the fire and I would hope that we can confirm a couple more signings in the next week or so”. Cousins also confirmed that current U19 player Stephen Boateng will train with the first team during pre-season with the aim of cementing a squad place with the first team for the year ahead.
