LONGFORD TOWN U17s

Town Under 17’s defeat Monaghan Utd-Cavan FP 3-2

The Longford Town Under 17 team picked up a valuable three points in their first home league game of the season at the City Calling Stadium on Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 victory over the Monaghan United-Cavan FP.

The Town dominated the first half and took the lead after just three minutes with a splendid individual goal from Patrick O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan received the ball on the right and skipped past three players before drilling home from just outside the box.

Monaghan Utd-Cavan FP equalised against the run of play on twenty-four minutes from a set piece, but the Town responded in fine style to lead 3-1 at the interval courtesy of a Cian Cheevers brace. Cheevers almost completed his hat-trick just before half-time but he was denied by the crossbar.

Despite being outclassed in the opening forty-five minutes, the visitors were a completely different proposition in the second-half as they took command of proceedings and deservedly pulled a goal back on seventy-six minutes to trail by just a goal.

The visitors laid siege to the Town goal for the remainder of the game but resolute defending kept them at bay and the Town held on for victory.

LONGFORD TOWN U19s

Town Under 19’s earn 2-1 away win over Monaghan Utd-Cavan FP

Longford Town started the game well and controlled large periods of the first half. Longford dominated the first half of the game from a possession point of view but were poor in the final third of the pitch.

Credit to Monaghan they had a game plan in the first half to be compact and defended really well making it difficult for the Town to play through them and were very dangerous on the counter attack.

Despite controlling the first half Longford found themselves 1-0 down from their own set piece. Monaghan broke in numbers after winning the ball and scored to lead at the interval.

Longford equalised just after half-time from a corner with Sean Bragazzi scoring with a volley that went in on off the crossbar.

Aodh Dervin was excellent on the day and worked really hard in the middle breaking up a lot of play and getting the Town on the attack quickly.

The winning goal came from Jerry Idahor who anticipated the rebound from the keeper and finished to make it to 2-1.

Dan Beya showed flashes of brilliance throughout the game but the entire team played it’s part in this impressive win over a talented Monaghan Utd-Cavan FP team.

Match report by Graham Kane

Longford Town started the game well and controlled large periods of the first half. We dominated the first half of the game from a possession point of view but we were poor in the final third of the pitch. Credit to Monaghan they had a game plan in the first half to be compact and defended really well in the first half making it difficult for us to play through them and were very dangerous on the counter attack. Despite controlling the first half we found ourselves 1-0 down from our own set-piece Monaghan broke in numbers after winning the ball and scored. We changed a few things at half time but our principles stayed the same we needed to stick to our game plan and we would eventually score.

We equalised just after half-time from a corner with Sean Bregazzi scoring with a volley that went in on off the crossbar. From there on in, we looked like the team that was going to go on to win the game, but was always cautious of Monaghan hitting us on the counter attack. Aodh Dervin was excellent for us on the day, worked really hard in the middle breaking up a lot of play and getting us on the attack quickly. He controlled the midfield for us and showed great desire to encourage rest of the team to go on and get the winning goal. 2nd goal came from Jerry Idahor who anticipated the rebound from the keeper and finished to make it to 2-1. Dan Beya showed flashes of brilliance throughout the game and is very strong one v one. Overall very happy with the performance of the team and also showed great character to get back into the game. Next week we play Finn Harps at home which will be a tough game for us but we will train well this week and prepare for that game.
